Exploring the Alpine Countries & Oberammergau – The Passion Play. After an overnight flight, arrive on Day two in Vienna, Austria. Day three embark on a city tour where you’ll visit the Schoenbrunn Palace and see the impressive St. Stephen's Cathedral. The afternoon is at leisure. Day four depart Vienna and after a short drive, embark on a cruise on the Danube River. Later visit the Melk Abbey before continuing on to Salzburg. Day five enjoy a walking tour highlighting Mozart’s Birthplace and Mirabell Gardens. Day six travel through Austria to Germany. Upon arrival in Munich, enjoy a city tour that highlights Olympic Park, the Glockenspiel and Marienplatz, a beautiful square with restaurants and shops. Next, depart for the quaint village of Oberammergau renowned for woodcarvings and the Passion Play. Day seven enjoy a performance of the Passion Play. The original performance dates back to 1634. During the Thirty Year War, the village made a vow that if God spared them from the Black Plague they would perform a passion play honoring the life of Christ every ten years. All performers are native to the village and the cast starts to grow their hair and beards more than a year in advance. Day eight enjoy a picture stop to view Neuschwanstein, Bavaria's most famous castle built by King Ludwig. Later, arrive in the Black Forest, a region famous for its artisans who create authentic cuckoo clocks, Hummels and woodcarvings. Day nine welcome to Switzerland! Your first stop en route to Zermatt is Chateau de Chillon on Lake Geneva. Later, arrive in Tasch and board a train for a short ride to the pedestrian village of Zermatt. Day ten it's your choice! Explore on foot during a guided walking tour or visit the Matterhorn Museum independently to learn more about the triumph and tragedy of the first ascent of this imposing peak. The afternoon is at leisure. Day eleven travel through the Grimsel Pass en route to Lucerne. Day twelve embark on a scenic walking tour of this picturesque city, including a stroll through its romantic Old Town. The afternoon is at leisure. Tonight, enjoy a farewell dinner as you toast the end of a memorable tour. Day thirteen the tour ends and you head home.
